Flyers deal Forsberg to Nashville

Hockey Betting Lines

02/16/2007 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Philadelphia Flyers have dealt center Peter Forsberg to the Nashville Predators for two players and two draft picks.

Nashville will send right wing Scottie Upshall, defenseman Ryan Parent and a first-round and a third-round draft pick to Philadelphia.

"Peter Forsberg is one of the NHL's most complete players and the ultimate competitor - a consistent winner who has year in and year out been a difference maker in the Stanley Cup playoffs," said Nashville vice president and general manager Daivd Poile. "He strengthens our club up the middle and will provide another battle-tested, veteran voice to our dressing room."

Forsberg skated with the team in practice Thursday in preparation for a home game against Toronto, but was listed as a healthy scratch just before the start.

Forsberg will now join the top team in the NHL, although he has been battling injuries all season as he has missed 16 games. He had a procedure done on his right foot this past May and also had two bursas removed. He was originally scheduled to have surgery on both his feet, but learned surgery on his left foot was not necessary. Forsberg returned in time to appear in the Flyers starting lineup for their first game of the season.

However, since then he had a right ankle problem that forced him to miss four consecutive games in December. Forsberg returned to the Flyers lineup on December 16 at Washington, but promptly suffered a concussion and missed the next three games. He has also sat out several games as he has had constant problems finding a skate that would comfortably fit his right foot.

The 33-year-old Swede has appeared in 40 games this season and has 11 goals and 29 assists. In 680 games over 11 seasons, nine of them with Quebec/Colorado, he has 246 goals and 610 assists.

The Calder Memorial Trophy winner as Rookie of the Year in 1995 and Hart Trophy winner as league MVP in 2003, Forsberg signed a two-year contract as an unrestricted free agent by the Flyers prior to the 2005-06 season.

Forsberg, who played in five All-Star games, also won a pair of Olympic gold medals with Sweden and two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche. He also was the leading point-scorer in the 2002-03 campaign.

Upshall, the sixth overall selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, has appeared in 14 games this season for Nashville and has recorded two goals and one assist. Over four seasons he has notched 11 goals and 18 assists in 77 games.

Parent was the Predators' first round pick (18th overall) in the 2005 NHL entry draft. The 19-year-old, who will turn 20 on March 17, is currently playing for the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League
